The first thing to consider is the age of your laptop.  The batteries will on average have a lifespan of 2 to 5 years or between 300 and 500 charging cycles.  If your laptop falls into this range, or is older, then it is probably best to replace the battery.

If your laptop is new and the battery is draining quickly then there are some simple steps you can try.  Reduce screen brightness, change the power saving settings, check which programs and apps are running in the background, check for corrupted firmware or turn off the keyboard backlight if you have one.
